AKA

AKA

Based: Johannesburg.

AKA is a South African mainstream rap artist. The rapper rose to fame after having joined a group with his two school mates. The rap group arose in 2002 and managed to garner a large number of successes; having entered South Africa’s music chart with a series of different released singles.

Following the groups split, AKA decided to focus on working behind the scenes. AKA took some time for himself to learn the ins and outs of engineering. The rapper then proceeded to create his very own production company in 2007.

After some time producing, AKA sought to pursue his own solo rap career. After his debut album garnered a huge level of success within his country he became a sort of poster child for South African Rap. He went on to receive various prestigious awards, the most prestigious of all having been the “Male Artist of the Year Award” at the South African Music Awards. (SAMA). After much success AKA dubbed the name, “Prince of South African Rap.”

Adding to his list of achievements AKA has also had the privilege of opening up for Kanye West, Big Sean, Snoop Dogg, and Kendrick Lamar.

African Jazz Pioneers

African Jazz Pioneers

Based: Johannesburg.

In the early 1950’s Bra Ntemi and his Alexandra All Star band hit the cutting edge of South Africa’s music scene, blending American big band sound with traditional Majuba tempo’s and Marabi influences.
They enjoyed enormous success and had a huge following in those days. Sadly, all this came to an end in the late sixties with the demolition of Sophiatown, when big bands went out of fashion.

There are few bands in South Africa that do the big band sound more infectiously and with more accomplishment and just plain love for the genre than the African Jazz Pioneers. With their wonderful happy music that celebrates life, the African Jazz Pioneers will make your head spin with joy.

International fame came soon after their first overseas tour as part of the Casa conference in Amsterdam in 1987. After the easing of the boycott in 1990, the African Jazz Pioneers were among the first to travel all over the world and perform at festivals in France, Japan, Switzerland, England, Spain, Germany, Sweden and Holland. During these years they shared the stage with the likes of Youssou N’Dour, Quincey Jones, Gilberto Gil, Nina Simone and Chick Corea, to name but a few.
Their music has been released in more countries than can be named here.

Since that first performance in Alexandra, African Jazz Pioneers have evolved to a point where their invigorating concerts have become famous at venues throughout the country and neighboring states. The band reaches everyone, from high society to liberation movements and political rallies, including the honour of performing several times for out country’s first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela.

The African Jazz Pioneers are:

  • Albert Kumalo – bandleader, guitar
  • Brahms Hlabatau – tenor sax
  • Sello Mnayaka – alto sax
  • Mpho Sithole – alto sax
  • Levy Kgasi – trumpet
  • Thabang Ramagofu – trumpet
  • Phillix Tau – bass
  • Madoda Gxabeka – keyboards
  • Aron Manana – Drums
  • Khanya Ceza – vocals.

Jeremy Loops

Jeremy Loops

Based: Cape Town

Juxtaposing booming city rhythms with lilting folk, Jeremy Loops perfectly captures the duality of his South African life.

The extremes aren’t new to the singer, who by day travels to the furthest corners of Africa to battle deforestation through his organization, Greenpop, and by night resumes as raconteur for raucous fans around the world.

Loops debuted at #1 on iTunes in South Africa with his debut album Trading Change, headlined major festivals, and maintained #1 on the three most prominent radio stations in Southern Africa with “Down South”, his breakout single.

This South African success was followed by top 40 iTunes debuts in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom. Down South has since amassed more than 20 million streams on Spotify alone, and charted on Spotify UK’s viral 50.

To say Jeremy merely roams is a disservice to his boundless activism – through his environmental work at Greenpop, he traverses Southern Africa teaching underprivileged schoolchildren how to protect their planet. This connection with the planet and its inhabitants is just one element of the broken tale Loops tells on Trading Change. Fraught with lost love and moving on, Trading Change is a fervent letter on embracing those intimate wounds and taking flight.
